Air France started testing an inflight mobile phone service on some
international flights, making it the first airline in the world to do so,
according to SITA.
A Mobile OnAir system has been installed on board one of the carrier’s Airbus
A318 planes, allowing customers to send and receive SMS, MMS, and mobile email
messages from any handset with a wireless data connection. The cost of this
service is billed by each traveler’s wireless service provider.
As the trial progresses, passengers will be able to make and receive phone calls
while flying. Customers on board the equipped plane can find out more about the
service in an information leaflet in seat pockets, and can fill in a
twentyquestion survey after using the service.
At the conclusion of this sixmonth trial, Air France will examine customer
comments and feedback to determine whether to bring mobile services to all of
its flights.
