BSNL, Indias no.1 Internet service provider, has invited expressions of
interest for the provision of a VoIP service throughout the whole of India.
Several companies submitted proposals by the deadline of 28 December 2007,
including Sterlite Optical, Aksh Optifibre, Indus Online and Smart Broadband.
BSNL has now extended the deadline as new enquiries are still being received.
Only four companies will be chosen by BSNL for providing the service.
At the moment, MTNL is the only company providing VoIP service in India through
a tieup with Aksh Optifibre. This facility is limited to subscribers in New
Delhi and Mumbai because of the limited reach of the company.
BSNL, which is stateowned, has divided the country into two zones for offering
the VoIP service. The company will offer franchises to two companies in each
zone: North West and South East.
