The Vietnamese government is set to allow three local companies to provide Wimax,
a broadband wireless technology that could help Vietnam join the digital world.
The companies, Vietnam Post and Telecommunications Corp (VNPT), FPT Telecom, and
Vietnam Digital Television Corp (VTC), said they were prepared to run tests for
providing Wimax as soon as licenses were granted.
However, it is not known when the licenses will be issued.
An FPT source told Thanh Nien the company planned to invest US$50 in developing
the new service in the coming years.
For developing nations like Vietnam, with poor fixed communications
infrastructure, Wimax (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) could
offer a vital link to the digital world.
Theoretically it can provide data rates of up to 70 mbps (megabytes per second)
over distances of up to 50 km. The maximum range of the widelyused WiFi
wireless technology is only 50 m.
