Though it may seem like the obvious for AT&T, the wireless serviceprovider
is finally offering SIM cards sans mobile phones.
The AT&T 3G 64K SIM card is available through the AT&T online store and is
likely available in store as well, though it may take some stores days (weeks?)
before getting the cards in.
The card costs $10, but you get it for $5 if you sign up for a two year
contract. The discount sucks, but $10 is still reasonable. We suggest avoiding
the two year plan since the whole point of the card is to give its user freedom.
AT&T previously required customers to choose a phone in order to activate a
plan. The phones usually come with SIM cards, which are easily moved to and
activated by unlocked GSM phones, but now customers don’t have to deal with
buying a phone that’ll never get used just to get a card.
The SIM card requires an unlocked GSM phone that works on the 800 and 900 MHz
bands, or a locked AT&T/Cingular phone. The phone must also be clear of any lost
or stolen alerts.
