There were a total of 310 million highspeed internet users worldwide by the
middle of last year, according to recent data from Idate.
Surprisingly, it was Western Europe which enjoyed the strongest growth momentum
in 2007 with 31% of the world’s new broadband connections, up from 28% in 2006.
Much of this growth was fueled by Germany, which overtook the UK last year as
Europe’s biggest highspeed internet market.
In the coming years Idate expects Europe’s momentum to be eclipsed by that of
the AsiaPacific region, which is already the global leader in broadband with
38% of all customers, and is expected to widen that gap as highspeed services
catch on in dialupdominated India and China.
Elsewhere in the world, Brazil and to a lesser extent, Russia, are expected to
experience strong and steady broadband growth over the next few years.
