Singapore Telecommunications Ltd. (SingTel) announced yesterday that it is
teaming up with Google, KDDI Corp., Bharti Airtel, Pacific Internet, and Global
Transit to build a new underwater cable linking Japan and and the United States.
The 10,000 km ultrahighspeed cable, named Unity, is set to be completed by
early 2010, at a cost of about US$300 million.
“This new submarine cable network, with its high capacity and resilient
transmission infrastructure, will be able to meet the strong demand for data,
ecommerce and Internet traffic between Asia and the US,” commented SingTel’s
executive vice president of networks, Mark Chong.
