China’s leading fixedline telephone operator, China Telecom, expects revenue
from nonvoice services to eclipse traditional telephone revenue within the next
two years, according to the company’s executives.
China Telecom currently generates about 36.5% of its revenue from dialup and
broadband internet and other data (nonvoice) services, reporters were told
yesterday, and this is expected to increase to about 50% in 24 months time.
The company reported a sharperthanexpected drop in earnings for the most
recent quarter as its landline users increasingly switched to mobile phones. Its
gross operating revenue for all of last year totaled 178.66 billion Yuan, or
US$25.46 billion.
