America’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has announced plans to utilize SMS messaging technology in a forthcoming emergency alert system, mandated by the Warning Alert Response Network (WARN) Act.
The nationwide SMS alert system, which has bet to be engineered, will allow “authorized senders,” within federal, state, and local government agencies to transmit alerts to mobile phone operators, which in turn will pass them on to customers in the relevant geographical areas.
FEMA hopes to set up message distribution and alerting protocols in the coming months, and have the entire system up and running by the end of next year.
