The United Kingdom currently has the world’s second largest mobile internet market, according to a recent report by Nielsen Mobile.
Mobile internet penetration in the UK currently stands at 12.9%, behind America (15.6%) and ahead of Italy (11.9%). In the first three months of this year, 28% of British mobile internet users recalled seeing advertisements while browsing the web on a wireless device, suggesting that the country has a budding mobile advertising market.
The widespread of unlimited data plans, together with an improving browsing experience, faster download speeds, and a greater range of mobile websites from familiar brands have all driven growth in mobile browsing, according to Nielsen.
Portal sites remain the most popular mobile internet destinations globally, with 36 million unique visitors in May 2008. Web-based email, weather, news, and search websites are also popular.
