Santiago de los Caballeros. Phone card scammers
have once more been active in the city. Their modus
operandi is to phone a person and tell them that a
family member has been in a car accident and that
they need phone cards to get the information about
the patient’s condition. Dozens of people have been
taken in by this confidence trick in the last couple
of weeks. The scammers appeared to target
employees and officials at the Metropolitan
Transport Office (OMSA), as well as other companies
and private homes.
One person, who did not disclose his identity,
spent RD$7,000 after being told that a close
relative had been seriously injured in a road
accident.
The fraud victim said he had received a call from
a person saying that his mother had been seriously
injured in an accident in San Pedro de Macorís.
“This is a big theft that the police authorities
and the telecommunications companies need to put a
stop to it so that it doesn’t go on happening”, said
the victim.
