American wireless giant, AT&T, may soon offer another tier of mobile broadband service for Apple iPhone customers, according to a recent BusinessWeek article citing “people with knowledge of the company’s thinking.”
AT&T currently only offers an unlimited iPhone data plan for $30 a month, but is contemplating a cheaper alternative plan, with bandwidth limits, for a monthly price of around $20. This would make the iPhone more attractive to light mobile internet users who cringe at the thought of paying $30 for data.
Another step that AT&T and Apple may soon take to broaden the iPhone’s appeal, according to BusinessWeek, is a price reduction for the device itself. AT&T has already discounted the iPhone twice, from its initial price of $599 in June 2007, to its current retail cost of $199, and is rumoured to be considering a $99 price tag in the near future.
