Internet giant, Google Inc., has promised $10 million in prize money to
software developers who create applications for its forthcoming mobile operating
system, Android.
Cash prizes will range from $25,000 to $275,000, the Mountain View,
Californiabased company said on Monday. They will be awarded to the programmers
who design particularly innovative and outstanding Android software, as decided
by a panel of judges.
Google is moving into the mobile software sector in hopes of extending its
dominance of the online advertising market into the rapidly expanding wireless
internet sector. Annual spending on mobile advertisements will jump to $11.4
billion in 2011, from just $2.17 million this year, according to Informa PLC, a
Londonbased research firm.
Approximately 99% of Google’s annual revenue currently comes from the sale of
advertising.
