U.S. telecommunications giant, AT&T Inc., said yesterday that it had applied
to participate India’s next wireless spectrum auctions, and hoped to acquire
airwaves throughout the country in partnership with Mahindra Telecommunications
Pvt. Ltd.
“This is an important step toward participating in India’s upcoming spectrum
allocation proceedings,” AT&T said in a statement.
The American company has applied for licenses in all 22 of India’s major
telecommunications circles, each of which awards licenses separately.
India’s Department of Telecommunications limits foreign direct investment in the
telecommunications sector to 74%, which is why AT&T has teamed up with
Punebased Mahindra.
